National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has firmly dismissed claims that his political affiliations compromise his impartiality in presiding over parliamentary proceedings. In a detailed press statement issued by his Press Unit on Saturday, the Speaker labelled a recent media report as “misleading” and “deeply skewed,” accusing it of attempting to erode public confidence in Parliament.
The article in question, published over the weekend, suggested that Wetang’ula’s continued leadership of Ford Kenya and his active political role in the Western Kenya region undermines his neutrality as Speaker. However, his office rebutted the assertions, maintaining that his conduct in the House remains within the bounds of the Constitution.
“Nowhere does the Constitution bar the Speaker from retaining membership or leadership of a political party,” the statement read. It added that Wetang’ula has always presided over House business with “distinction,” upholding fairness and neutrality.
The Speaker’s office emphasized that his political engagements outside the formal operations of the National Assembly do not breach any legal or constitutional provisions. “Speaker Wetang’ula retains the right, enshrined in our democratic order, to engage with his constituents, articulate regional aspirations, and offer leadership in political discourse,” it said.
Responding to references made to a recent High Court ruling, the Speaker’s team cautioned against misinterpreting judicial decisions for political gain. “It is critical to note that the ruling does not invalidate Speaker Wetang’ula’s role or diminish his capacity to preside impartially,” the statement added.
The press unit denounced portrayals of the Speaker as a “partisan actor,” arguing that such labels discredit a record of principled public service spanning decades.
The statement concluded by reaffirming Wetang’ula’s commitment to upholding the Constitution, the Standing Orders of the House, and the values of impartiality and integrity. The Speaker also urged the media to observe professional standards when reporting on holders of constitutional offices, emphasizing the importance of fairness and accuracy in safeguarding democratic institutions.
