National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has directed the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to table a preliminary report on the death of Albert Ojwang’ in the House on Thursday at 2:30 PM. The directive follows growing public outrage and concern among lawmakers over the circumstances of the young man’s death, allegedly at the hands of police officers.
The matter was raised by Nyando MP Jared Okello, who described the incident as grave and urgent. Speaker Wetangula echoed these sentiments, comparing it to the story of South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. “This is, by all means, a very serious matter,” he stated, stressing the need for a transparent update before the national budget presentation.
Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, chair of the security committee, pledged to deliver the report as directed. He confirmed that both the Inspector General of Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have been summoned to provide details about the incident. “We are deeply disturbed,” Tongoyo said, assuring that the committee is treating the case with utmost seriousness.
MPs from across the political divide expressed their outrage. Tharaka MP George Murugara criticized the police for what he termed as colonial-era practices, calling for urgent reforms at training institutions like the Kiganjo Police College. “Justice must prevail. We must condemn extrajudicial killings unequivocally,” he emphasized.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo called on President William Ruto to ensure swift prosecution of any officers found culpable. She warned against the trend of cases losing momentum once public pressure wanes and even suggested involving international investigators if necessary.
Odhiambo also addressed the emotional toll on MPs, particularly those from Homa Bay County. “We are hurting too. This is our home,” she said, recalling the recent death of Hon. Ong’ondo Were and now Ojwang’, who lived nearby.
The House is expected to receive the preliminary report on Thursday, which will shed light on ongoing investigations and potentially chart the way forward toward justice for Albert Ojwang’.
