Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has called on Kenyan politicians to shun divisive rhetoric and embrace respectful discourse as they compete for political space. Speaking during a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County, Wetang’ula emphasized that political contests should focus on ideas rather than insults.
“In the past, I have consistently said that we must uphold peace because peace has no alternative in life. We may disagree but we must do so respectfully, we may compete but we must do so respectfully,” said the Speaker.
He cautioned that the ongoing political altercations and verbal attacks among leaders were polarizing the country at a time when national unity was paramount for development and stability. Wetang’ula called on the church to pray for the nation as political tensions escalate.
“Peace has no alternative. It’s the only path that guarantees stability, unity, and progress for our society,” he stressed.
Kanduyi MP John Makali, who accompanied the Speaker, echoed his sentiments, urging the Church to play a central role in shaping the moral fabric of society, especially among the youth. He emphasized the importance of spiritual guidance and character-building in national development.
During the event, Wetang’ula also reiterated his commitment to ensuring Bungoma town is elevated to city status. “I will ensure Bungoma is upgraded to a city in my lifetime,” he declared, vowing to pursue all necessary measures to meet the criteria for city status.
The church later led a peaceful procession to pray for various sectors within Bungoma County, including the cereals board offices, county assembly, executive offices, markets, and business premises. The faithful also prayed for Kenya’s prosperity and peace.
Among those present at the service were Bungoma County First Lady Dr. Margaret Makelo, Kenyan Ambassador to the UAE Ken Nganga, Bungoma County Speaker Emmanuel Situma, and several Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
Wetang’ula’s message comes at a time when national dialogue and political maturity are needed to foster unity and steer Kenya towards sustainable growth.
