Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has hit back at former President Uhuru Kenyatta following his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration. Speaking on Saturday, the outspoken legislator urged Uhuru to “relax” in retirement and refrain from politicising issues of security and governance.
Sudi accused the former head of state of hypocrisy, saying he should not lecture the Kenya Kwanza administration about failed projects when his own government had shortcomings.
“Some leaders are lecturing us about failed projects despite failing to implement major projects themselves during their time,” Sudi said. “You can’t do anything else now. We supported you, and you went home. Let others lead.”
The MP, a close ally of President Ruto, further argued that Uhuru presided over a “bad term” despite enjoying support for 10 years. He maintained that the former president should focus on his retirement and leave matters of government to the current leadership.
Uhuru had on Friday criticised Ruto during a Jubilee Party NDC meeting at Ngong Racecourse, accusing him of being intolerant of dissenting voices, especially during the recent Gen Z protests. He stressed that leadership should embrace inclusivity and dialogue, especially with the younger generation.
“This requires always having an open mind and a listening ear, even to those you disagree with—and especially to the voices of our younger generations,” Uhuru said.
He lamented that many of the programmes initiated under his administration had collapsed, citing the scrapping of Linda Mama and its replacement with what he termed as “untested schemes.”
The sharp exchange highlights the ongoing political tension between Uhuru and Ruto, once allies but now fierce rivals. Their fallout ahead of the 2022 elections saw Uhuru back opposition leader Raila Odinga, a move that cemented the political rift.
As the war of words continues, it underscores the widening divide between the former president and Ruto’s allies, with each side accusing the other of failed leadership.
