A suspected drug trafficker was apprehended in the Kibaoni area of Kilifi North Sub-County after a swift police operation triggered by a tip-off from concerned members of the public.
Officers from Kilifi Police Station acted on intelligence provided by locals who raised alarm over the suspect’s suspected involvement in illegal drug activities. Acting on the tip, the police set up an ambush that led to the suspect’s arrest.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that a search conducted during the arrest uncovered a nylon packet containing eleven sachets of a substance believed to be heroin. Additionally, officers recovered Sh800 suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade.
“The suspect is currently in custody at Kilifi Police Station, pending further investigations and arraignment in court,” the NPS said. The seized drugs and money have been secured as exhibits for use during the legal proceedings.
The police commended members of the public for their vigilance and cooperation, noting that community support continues to be instrumental in combating drug trafficking in the region.
“Such partnerships between law enforcement and the public are vital in tackling the drug menace that threatens the safety and wellbeing of our communities,” added the NPS.
Drug trafficking remains a persistent issue in the Coast region, prompting increased law enforcement activities aimed at dismantling criminal networks. Authorities have promised continued crackdowns to curb the supply and distribution of narcotics.
In May, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) held a five-day anti-narcotics workshop at the National Criminal Investigations Academy, bringing together investigators from across East Africa. The workshop addressed emerging challenges, including synthetic drugs, psychoactive substances, and the use of digital platforms in trafficking.
Kenya’s geographical position and well-developed transport infrastructure have made it a target for international drug cartels, with traffickers exploiting gaps in maritime and border control.
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader network behind the Kilifi arrest, including potential suppliers and distribution links. Under Kenyan law, penalties for drug trafficking vary, with those found in possession of commercial quantities facing up to 20 years in prison and hefty fines.
