Emotions ran high in Kachien, Central Kasipul on Saturday as senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders visited the rural home of the late Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was recently shot dead by an assailant riding a motorbike along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
Leading the high-profile delegation was Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, flanked by National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed and a host of other lawmakers and party officials. The leaders were received by a somber crowd of family members, friends, and constituents, all struggling to come to terms with the brutal killing of their beloved MP.
Speaking during the emotional visit, Governor Wanga described Were’s death as a tragic loss not just for Kasipul, but for the entire nation. “What a loss!” she exclaimed. “It’s crucial that we come together as we prepare for his final journey. May the Almighty guide us through this process.”
MP Were, serving his second term, had earned widespread respect for his calm demeanor and unwavering dedication to grassroots development. He was particularly known for championing education, healthcare, and youth empowerment initiatives in his constituency. Many constituents spoke of him as a leader who was always accessible, compassionate, and committed to the upliftment of his people.
Junet Mohamed echoed similar sentiments, saying, “We are here not only to mourn but to also stand with the family and constituents. Were was a brother and a selfless servant of the people. We must seek justice for his death.”
The leaders called on the government to speed up investigations into the heinous act and bring the perpetrators to book. Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the assailant, whose motive remains unknown.
As plans for the late MP’s burial commence, the community continues to reel from the shock of his sudden demise. Tributes continue to pour in from across the political divide, a testament to the far-reaching impact of his leadership.
Charles Ong’ondo Were leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and humility qualities that endeared him to many and will be dearly missed.
