Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has scoffed at the recent show of unity among opposition leaders, saying they will be in for a rude awakening when the 2027 elections arrive. Speaking during an economic empowerment event in Igegania, Gatundu North, Kindiki dismissed the gathering of political heavyweights at the Wamunyoro home of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as premature and inconsequential.
The meeting brought together several prominent figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and ex-Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi and Mithika Linturi. The leaders vowed to unite in a bid to “liberate Kenya” and restore public trust in government.
However, Kindiki was undeterred. “This is the time for work, not for scrambling for positions,” he said. “Wakati huo ukifika, tutanyoroshana na hao wanaume – when the time comes, we will face off with those men. They will not believe it.”
Kindiki insisted that the Kenya Kwanza administration is focused on fulfilling its promises to Kenyans, warning that in 2027, every leader will have to present their performance record. “There is a time for everything, and this is the time to deliver,” he emphasized.
In a veiled jab at Gachagua, who has recently emerged as a fierce critic of President William Ruto, Kindiki added that the political contest is now clearly drawn. Gachagua has increasingly aligned himself with former rivals and disillusioned allies from both the Ruto and Raila Odinga camps, attempting to craft a formidable political alliance ahead of the next general election.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders argue that only a united front can save Kenya from its current challenges. “Give us the mandate, and you’ll see how things should be run,” said Matiang’i, echoing the group’s determination.
As the political temperature rises, the stage is set for a high-stakes 2027 showdown between a government focused on its development agenda and a resurgent opposition promising reform and restoration.
