Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has officially declared his intention to vie for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, marking a major political shift from his previously stated ambitions to run for Nairobi governor.
Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, the three-term Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator reaffirmed his roots in Bungoma County and committed to championing inclusive leadership that unlocks the region’s untapped potential. “Bungoma is a very strategic county, the third largest in Kenya. The potential in this county is huge, and we need to tap it,” Wanyonyi said.
Central to his campaign will be youth empowerment and economic inclusion, issues he believes are key to transforming the county’s fortunes. He also emphasized his intention to build a broad, inclusive coalition of supporters from Bungoma’s diverse communities, religious bodies, and business groups.
“All the interests in Bungoma business groups, religious groups, various communities I know there are many operating from here. We will walk together to make sure we fulfil this journey well,” he said.
Wanyonyi’s announcement puts an end to speculation about his political direction, especially after he had positioned himself as a frontrunner in the Nairobi gubernatorial race during the last election cycle. He now says his focus has fully shifted to Bungoma, promising a more visible and sustained presence in the region moving forward.
“Expect from now my presence here in Bungoma to be more than in Nairobi to find my footing,” he stated.
While reaffirming his ODM affiliation, Wanyonyi was careful not to tie himself to specific political alignments just yet. “I have come as a team, Wanyonyi… I belong to ODM, but right now I have come here as a candidate. The rest we shall define in due time,” he said.
His entry into the Bungoma race sets the stage for a hotly contested gubernatorial battle. Among others vying for the seat is Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, signaling a competitive field as the 2027 elections draw closer.
