A cloud of grief has descended upon Mutitu village in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, after a mysterious house fire claimed the lives of two young siblings on Tuesday evening. The heartbreaking incident occurred around 7 p.m., engulfing the family home in flames while the children were inside.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out under unclear circumstances as the children an 8-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister slept. Despite the swift response of neighbours who rushed to help, the flames spread rapidly, leaving them with little chance to rescue the young victims.
A third child, a Grade 9 girl, miraculously managed to escape the inferno. She raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to respond, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain.
The tragedy has left the community reeling in shock. Family members expressed their anguish and confusion, stating that no fire had been lit in the house at the time, raising suspicion about the cause of the blaze.
“There was a huge fire at home yesterday and my cousin’s children perished,” said Wizzy Chris, a relative of the victims, in an emotional interview with Inooro TV. “We were returning from the hospital after picking up their mother who had just been discharged when we received a call that the house was on fire.”
The survivors and other relatives are now calling on authorities to launch a full-scale investigation into the incident, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the fire are suspicious.
“We are asking authorities to investigate this matter as no fire had been lit in the house, and we are wondering how the fire even started,” a family member emphasized.
Local leaders and residents have joined the family in demanding answers, urging the police and fire department to examine the scene thoroughly. Meanwhile, the community is rallying around the bereaved family, offering support as they begin to make funeral arrangements.
The incident has highlighted the need for increased awareness and preparedness around fire safety, especially in rural homes, even as many questions remain unanswered in this devastating case.
