Police have launched an investigation into the tragic death of a female Administration Police officer, suspected to have succumbed to complications arising from an induced abortion in Nairobi’s Kawangware area.
The young officer, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin, was attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) based in Embakasi. She was reportedly on leave at the time of the incident.
The case was reported by Inspector Christine Muthoni of Muthangari Police Station under OB No. 05/18/06/2025. According to the report, the officer’s lifeless body was brought to Eagle Hospital at around 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday in a private white vehicle bearing registration number KCP 623Y.
Medical personnel at the facility confirmed her death, suspecting complications linked to a botched abortion procedure. It was also established that the officer had earlier been taken to Kabiro Hospital, located approximately seven kilometers from Muthangari Police Station.
Upon receiving the report, a team from Muthangari Police Station, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Dagoretti, and the Scene of Crime (SOC) unit responded promptly. They discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood in the vehicle that had brought her to the hospital.
The estimated time of death was placed at around 10:20 p.m. on Monday night—about two hours before she was brought to Eagle Hospital.
Two individuals have since been arrested in connection with the incident: Bruce Matte, a nurse reportedly involved in the procedure, and Indombuhai Humphrey, the driver of the vehicle that transported the deceased. Both are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The officer’s body has been moved to City Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of reproductive health services and the dangers associated with clandestine abortion procedures. Authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to bring all responsible parties to justice.
