Police in Kakamega County have launched investigations into the deaths of two individuals in separate but chilling incidents that occurred within hours of each other in Lurambi constituency.
The first incident unfolded late Sunday night when a night guard at a local petrol station was brutally murdered by an armed gang. The guard, who has yet to be publicly identified, was reportedly ambushed by the assailants just a short distance from a nearby police station.
According to residents, the attack has shaken the community and raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of local security patrols.
“The guard was ambushed at night, a short distance from the police station,” said Evans Shimonyo, a resident of the area. “We are living in fear. If such incidents can happen so close to police, where is our safety?”
In a separate incident roughly two kilometers from the first scene, the lifeless body of a man was discovered abandoned along the Kakamega-Webuye highway in the Shimalavandu area. Police confirmed the discovery was made during the late-night hours and have yet to establish the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding his death.
“The body was found abandoned along the roadside in Shimalavandu during late-night hours,” police noted in a statement, adding that they suspect foul play.
Kakamega OCPD Vincent Cherutich confirmed that investigations into both cases are ongoing. He urged residents to remain calm as security agencies work to establish whether the incidents are connected and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, residents have taken to the streets to protest what they describe as an alarming rise in insecurity in the region. Demonstrators are demanding increased police patrols, better lighting along highways, and faster responses from local law enforcement.
“The government must act now. We cannot keep burying our loved ones because of criminals roaming freely,” said one protestor.
As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, hoping that swift justice will be delivered and that renewed security efforts will restore peace in the troubled area
