The investigation into the brutal murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were has intensified, with police arresting two more suspects, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to six.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday identified the new suspects as Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, alias Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi. Their arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, as detectives recovered crucial evidence believed to be linked to the assassination.
According to the DCI, the suspects led officers to Odhiambo’s residence, where a cache of potentially incriminating items was discovered. Among the recovered items were two pistols a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz along with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition. Also found were a bag and footwear matching descriptions of items worn by one of the assailants captured on surveillance footage at the crime scene.
“All items have been submitted for forensic examination,” the DCI said in a statement, suggesting that ballistic tests and other analyses will determine if the weapons were used in the shooting.
An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that MP Were was shot five times, all from the left side of his body. Two bullets were recovered during the examination, adding to another previously retrieved from inside his vehicle.
The incident occurred on April 30 along Ngong Road when the MP was ambushed and shot dead by a gunman reported to have been riding on a motorcycle. The brazen attack sent shockwaves through the political class and the public, prompting a swift and expansive investigation.
Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the assassination, but with six suspects now in custody and forensic analysis underway, investigators remain optimistic that a breakthrough is imminent.
The DCI assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure justice for the slain MP, whose death has left a significant void in the Kasipul constituency. The probe continues.
