The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has intensified its internal disciplinary actions, summoning two nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs) over alleged affiliation with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Nyeri’s Ann Thumbi and Nairobi’s Joy Muthoni Mwangi have been cited for insubordination and alleged contravention of the UDA constitution and the Political Parties Act, 2011. According to a letter dated June 6, 2025, from UDA’s Disciplinary Committee Chairperson Charles Njenga, the two are accused of engaging in political activities supporting DCP, including public endorsements and attendance at party rallies.
The committee claims that Thumbi and Muthoni incited UDA members to defect by actively participating in DCP functions. Thumbi is reported to have attended two DCP rallies on May 15 and May 24, donning the party’s branded merchandise and rallying residents to join the outfit. Muthoni allegedly took to Facebook to publicly express support for DCP, further urging followers to leave UDA.
“These actions amount to incitement of party members to leave the UDA party and total disregard for the party constitution, rules, and code of conduct,” Njenga stated.
The summons require the two MCAs to appear before the disciplinary committee on June 20 at Hustler Plaza in Nairobi, where they are expected to respond to the allegations. They may attend in person or be represented by legal counsel. The committee warned that if found guilty, the MCAs could face sanctions, including suspension, expulsion, or fines.
This latest development follows UDA’s recent move to oust Gloria Orwoba as a nominated senator under similar accusations. The disciplinary measures are seen as part of UDA’s broader strategy to contain dissent and reassert authority as internal divisions threaten to splinter the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
With the Gachagua-linked DCP gaining traction, the disciplinary committee’s actions underline the growing tension within UDA and signal a crackdown on perceived disloyalty among its ranks.
