he United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially picked Leo Muriuki Muthende to contest the Mbeere North constituency seat in the upcoming by-election.
The announcement came after seven aspirants withdrew, showing unity and consensus within the ruling party.
Party Leaders Praise Political Maturity
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, UDA Deputy Party Leader, lauded the aspirants for embracing democracy.
“As a party, we are happy to see the candidates have all endorsed one candidate,” Kindiki said during the nomination event.
Muthende will aim to fill the vacancy left by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku.
By-Election Schedule and Nominations
The Mbeere North by-election is set for November 27, 2025. UDA will hold its nominations on September 20, 2025. Interested candidates were invited to register between August 14 and September 5 via the UDA party portal.
Competition from Other Parties
Muthende is expected to face stiff competition from candidates of other political parties.
One notable contender is Duncan Mbui, who had sought the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) ticket. Mbui recently announced he will run as an independent candidate due to internal party disagreements.
Mbui accused DCP of blocking his candidature. On social media, he said:
“The club has been influenced to decide that DCP should not field a candidate here, a decision I view as a deliberate attempt to kill my ambition and that of the Kivui-Kivui fraternity.”
What to Expect
With the by-election approaching, Mbeere North is set for a heated contest. UDA’s consensus around Muthende shows party strength, while Mbui’s independent run could test voter loyalty.
Residents will have to choose between party unity and an independent voice, making this by-election a key indicator of local political trends.
