Thousands of residents in Tembelio ward, Moiben Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, flocked to polling stations on Friday to cast their votes in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries. The exercise seeks to elect a new Member of County Assembly (MCA) following a recent leadership shake-up in the county.
The seat became vacant after Evans Kipruto Kapkea, the former MCA, was appointed Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu in November 2024. His elevation came after the resignation of former Deputy Governor John Kibet Barorot, creating the need for a by-election.
According to spot checks across several of the 34 polling stations in Tembelio, voter turnout was encouraging, especially during the morning hours. The strong participation highlights the continued political significance of Uasin Gishu County, considered President William Ruto’s backyard and a UDA stronghold.
Speaking after casting his ballot at Kaptuktuk Primary School polling center, aspirant Nicholas Koech applauded the smooth process and the integration of technology in the exercise.
“I am very satisfied with online voting and confident that the results will reflect the will of the great people of Tembelio ward. We are hoping for the best,” said Koech.
Koech is among eight aspirants vying for the UDA ticket. Others include Reuben Kigen Tobosei, Emmanuel Toroitich, Timothy Lelmet, Emanuel Kiprop, Grace Jemutai, Fred Kirui, and Nahashon Kipsiro.
The primaries are expected to set the stage for a hotly contested ward by-election. With UDA’s dominance in the region, securing the party ticket is seen as almost a guarantee of victory in the final vote.
Residents and party officials alike hailed the high turnout as a demonstration of grassroots democracy and political enthusiasm within the ruling party.
