The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is poised to sever ties with Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba following allegations of disloyalty and misconduct. In a strongly worded statement on Saturday, UDA Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi confirmed that Orwoba’s time in the ruling party had come to an end, declaring, “We are done with you. You are no longer a party member. You can’t bite the hands that feed you.”
Nyakundi’s comments came after a cryptic message from Orwoba to UDA Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro and Nyakundi himself, in which she wrote, “Good morning Sylvanus Osoro and Japheth Nyakundi… Gusii Community is watching you. Happy Sabbath.” The message was seen as a challenge to the two Kisii leaders, amid growing speculation about Orwoba’s political affiliation with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, a prominent figure who has been critical of UDA leadership.
UDA leadership has expressed dissatisfaction with Orwoba’s public actions and statements, particularly her alignment with political figures opposed to the party. The party had earlier issued a summons to Orwoba over her involvement in several contentious events. One of the most significant incidents was her participation in the welcoming ceremony for Fred Matiang’i at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, followed by her attendance at his homecoming celebration at Gusii Stadium.
Additionally, Orwoba’s appearance on Spice FM on April 22, where she openly criticized the government’s labor mobility program a key initiative under President William Ruto’s administration further fueled tensions within the party. These actions led the UDA disciplinary committee to accuse Orwoba of misconduct, including “disloyalty” and “conduct unbecoming” of a senator representing the party.
In response to the senator’s actions, the disciplinary committee has scheduled a hearing for Orwoba on May 16 at 9:00 a.m. at the Hustler Plaza. The party’s leadership has made it clear that loyalty to the party and its leadership is paramount, and any disregard for this loyalty will not be tolerated.
As UDA prepares to move forward with the disciplinary process, the political future of Senator Orwoba hangs in the balance.
