The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has summoned Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba over actions the party deems to be in violation of its Code of Conduct. The summons, issued by the party’s disciplinary committee, accuses Orwoba of engaging in conduct that undermines her allegiance to UDA.
At the heart of the accusations are Orwoba’s actions surrounding the recent political events of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Orwoba attended both Matiang’i’s homecoming at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the celebratory event at Gusii Stadium. Matiang’i, who had been a key figure in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, is widely seen as positioning himself for a 2027 presidential run. His homecoming event attracted significant attention, as many speculated about his future political ambitions. The senator’s presence at these events has raised concerns within UDA, which views it as an indication of allegiance to a political faction outside the party.
In addition to her attendance at the events, Orwoba also came under scrutiny for her comments during an interview on Spice FM on April 22. The senator criticized the government’s labour mobility program, a key initiative of President William Ruto’s administration. UDA claims that her statements reflect disloyalty to the party, which nominated her to the Senate.
The disciplinary committee has instructed Orwoba to appear before them on May 16 at 9:00 a.m. to provide an explanation for her actions. The party has warned that failure to provide satisfactory reasons could lead to punitive measures, including potential expulsion from UDA.
As of now, Orwoba has not publicly responded to the summons. The unfolding situation has placed the spotlight on the political dynamics within UDA as it seeks to maintain unity ahead of future elections. The outcome of Orwoba’s disciplinary hearing could have significant implications for her political career and the broader party landscape.
