The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has signalled its intent to take disciplinary action against more members deemed disloyal, following the expulsion of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, a staunch ally of President William Ruto, has warned other perceived party rebels that similar consequences await them if they continue to defy party rules and loyalty expectations.
Orwoba was expelled on Monday for gross misconduct and for allegedly promoting the ideals of rival political formations, particularly those aligned with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua, who was impeached last October after falling out with Ruto, recently launched the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which has attracted dissenting figures from UDA.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak program on Thursday, Cherargei singled out Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, who has been critical of President Ruto and was present at Gachagua’s DCP launch. “Distinguish freedom of association from loyalty to a party,” warned Cherargei. “I am warning the likes of Nyutu and others who want to be rebels within UDA. The party will come after you.”
Orwoba’s expulsion stems from her public endorsement of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, who recently returned to the country and has hinted at a 2027 presidential bid. UDA accused her of contravening the party’s code of conduct by attending Matiang’i’s welcome at JKIA and his homecoming celebration at Gusii Stadium in April.
“She told the disciplinary committee she had to be there because Matiang’i is from her community. What sort of defence is that?” posed Cherargei, adding that members dissatisfied with party policies are free to run as independents.
Following her expulsion, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi gazetted Orwoba’s seat as vacant, and UDA has nominated Consolata Wakwabubi from Bungoma as her replacement.
However, Orwoba has obtained court orders suspending the implementation of UDA’s disciplinary decision, temporarily halting her ouster. The unfolding events mark a critical juncture for UDA as it seeks to reinforce internal discipline ahead of the 2027 general elections.
