Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday chaired the Jubilee Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held in Nairobi a significant move marking his formal return to the helm of the party’s leadership.
The meeting, which took place virtually for Uhuru while other members gathered physically at the party headquarters, comes just weeks after the Registrar of Political Parties reaffirmed Uhuru as the official Party Leader. The special gazette notice dated June 30 also recognized officials elected during the Special National Delegates Convention (SNDC) held on May 22, 2023.
Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni described the meeting as a critical step toward reaffirming the party’s direction and reviving its founding principles of unity and development. “The 4th President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, and the Party Leader of the Jubilee Party, today chaired a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Nairobi. The meeting marks a significant step in reaffirming the party’s direction, unity, and renewed commitment to its founding ideals. #MbelePamoja,” Kioni posted on Facebook.
In attendance were key party officials, including Vice Chairman David Murathe, Organising Secretary Pauline Njoroge, and other top NEC members, signaling a united front after months of internal wrangles.
The meeting follows a protracted leadership dispute that began in early 2023, when a faction led by EALA MP Kanini Kega and Nominated MP Sabina Chege attempted to wrest control of the party. They expelled Kioni and Murathe and suspended Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi, citing alleged misconduct.
The faction also removed Uhuru as party leader, appointing Sabina Chege in an acting capacity. The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal initially upheld the changes in a July 2023 ruling.
However, High Court Judge Janet Mulwa later reversed that decision, ruling the February 2023 NEC meeting that triggered the expulsions was unconstitutional. Her verdict reinstated Uhuru, Kioni, Murathe, and Gichohi to their rightful positions.
With Tuesday’s NEC meeting, Jubilee appears to be charting a path of consolidation under Uhuru’s leadership, signaling stability and a renewed commitment to the party’s original vision.
