Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has thrown his weight behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, endorsing him as Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. The decision was made during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Nairobi and chaired virtually by Uhuru, who also serves as Jubilee’s Party Leader.
Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni announced the resolutions, confirming Matiang’i’s elevation to deputy party leader and his nomination to represent Jubilee in the United Opposition alliance.
“We, as NEC, have appointed Dr. Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i as our deputy party leader going forward,” Kioni stated. “Alongside that, we have resolved that Dr. Matiang’i represents us at the United Opposition and approved his application to be the Jubilee presidential candidate.”
The endorsement marks a significant political comeback for Matiang’i, who has largely maintained a low profile since leaving office in 2022. His re-entry positions him as a formidable contender in the 2027 presidential race, potentially reshaping opposition politics.
The United Opposition coalition brings together several senior figures, including Deputy Chief Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party. Former Attorney General Justin Muturi is also part of the alliance.
Kioni emphasized that the NEC’s move symbolizes Jubilee’s renewed push for political relevance after years of dormancy following its split with President William Ruto.
“The NEC approved and resolved that Dr. Matiang’i carries the Jubilee flag as our presidential candidate and becomes the face of the party,” Kioni said.
With this endorsement, Jubilee aims to re-establish itself as a key political force ahead of the 2027 polls, with Matiang’i expected to spearhead its revival and lead the charge within the broader opposition movement.
