Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined Kenyans in mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, who died on Sunday night, November 9, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday, November 10, 2025, Kenyatta described Bishop Sulumeti as a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith, whose life was marked by humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication to service.
“Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega is a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service,” Kenyatta said.
The former president also highlighted Bishop Sulumeti’s role as a moral compass and peacemaker, noting his tireless work to uplift communities through the Church’s ministry. “He touched countless lives through his ministry and steadfast dedication to uplifting communities,” Kenyatta added.
A Legacy of Faith and Service
Born in 1939, Bishop Philip Sulumeti was ordained a priest in 1966 for the Diocese of Kisumu. He became the first bishop of the newly established Kakamega Diocese in 1978, serving until his retirement in 2014.
During his episcopal ministry, Bishop Sulumeti championed education, social development, and pastoral care, founding numerous parishes, schools, and health institutions across Western Kenya. His leadership left a lasting mark on Kenya’s faith and moral fabric.
Reflecting on his passing, Kenyatta extended his condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, its clergy, and the faithful. “Bishop Sulumeti’s legacy of faith, unity, and love will remain deeply etched in the hearts of all who knew him,” the former president said.
