The U.S. Embassy in Kenya has strongly condemned the harassment and intimidation of journalists, highlighting their crucial role in upholding democracy. This comes amid growing concern over the alleged arrest of Kitui-based journalist Emmanuel Maleve under unclear circumstances.
In a video statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), U.S. Charge d’affaires Marc Dillard emphasized that journalists are essential in a democratic society, acting as a bridge between citizens and their government.
“By asking questions and holding those in power accountable, journalists play a vital role in protecting democracy,” said Dillard. “Sometimes their work makes officials, including myself, uncomfortable, but even so, I know their work is invaluable.”
Dillard reiterated the U.S. Embassy’s firm stance against censorship and efforts to silence the media. “We oppose efforts to silence or censor journalists. And this World Press Freedom Day, as journalists face censorship and threats, the U.S. Embassy celebrates the value of a free press that tells the truth boldly,” he stated.
The statement comes in the wake of troubling reports involving Emmanuel Maleve, who was allegedly arrested due to a story he published. The circumstances of his arrest remain murky, with no formal records at the Kitui police station or the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on the Inspector General of Police and the DCI to urgently investigate the incident. MCK CEO David Omwoyo expressed concern over the lack of transparency, noting that Maleve’s rights may have been violated.
“The circumstances surrounding Maleve’s arrest remain opaque. No official statements were recorded, raising serious questions about the legality and transparency of the process,” said Omwoyo. He termed the incident as an arbitrary and unprocedural arrest aimed at intimidating a journalist.
Omwoyo further noted the irony of such a violation occurring during World Press Freedom Day 2025, a time meant to champion free and independent media. “This action presents a troubling attack on press freedom,” he added.
The incident has reignited calls for government institutions to uphold press freedom and protect journalists from harassment and intimidation.
