Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on residents to seek divine guidance in choosing a leader who will build on her legacy when she exits office in 2027. Speaking on Thursday during the County Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, Waiguru highlighted the county’s development under her leadership and emphasized the importance of electing capable leaders in the future.
“Start praying now for Kirinyaga that it may get a better leader than Anne Waiguru,” she urged. The governor, now in her second term, said her record of achievement is visible across the county and warned against entrusting the county to non-performers once her tenure ends.
Waiguru, who previously served as Devolution Cabinet Secretary and Chairperson of the Council of Governors, acknowledged concerns among residents about the county’s future. She, however, expressed confidence in the availability of competent leaders, stressing that divine guidance should play a role in the decision-making process. “God is not limited to Anne Waiguru, God is not limited to any human being. God can provide a person who will take us from this level to the next,” she said, citing Matthew 5:16 as her source of inspiration in governance.
She further noted that leadership extends beyond the governor’s office, highlighting the crucial role of the county assembly in achieving development goals. “It’s not just about the governor’s seat—the county assembly too, because a governor cannot function without it. We must not take our county backwards,” she added.
Waiguru has been at the helm of Kirinyaga since 2017, succeeding Joseph Ndathi, the county’s inaugural governor. She was re-elected in 2022, overcoming a legal challenge by then-Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, who unsuccessfully sought to nullify the 2017 election results. In that election, Waiguru garnered 161,373 votes against Karua’s 122,091.
Looking ahead, Waiguru expressed her hope that the progress achieved under her leadership across sectors will be furthered by her successor. “We remain committed to delivering our development goals for the remaining two years. Above all, we give glory to God,” she said, adding that work should be the main determinant in the 2027 elections. She plans to display billboards illustrating the county’s transformation under her leadership to guide voters.
