Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has strongly condemned her 20-day suspension from the National Assembly, claiming the move is aimed at muting her vocal campaign against the rising tide of femicide in Kenya.
The suspension, handed down by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, follows a protest Wamuchomba staged in Parliament. The lawmaker had confronted Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over what she described as the slow and ineffective investigation into the Kware Dumpsite murders in Nairobi’s Embakasi area.
The case, which shocked the nation in July 2024, involved the discovery of multiple women’s bodies at the dumpsite. According to Wamuchomba, 13 months later, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has only managed to positively identify a few victims, with little progress toward justice.
She further alleged that the prime suspect, Collin Jumiasi, escaped police custody on August 20, 2024, and remains at large, with authorities offering no substantial updates. “This punitive action is viewed as an attempt to silence both myself and the broader anti-femicide movement, which continues to demand accountability from security agencies,” she said.
Wamuchomba also took issue with CS Murkomen’s dismissal of the BBC Africa Eye documentary Madams: Exposing Kenya’s Child Sex Trade, accusing him of downplaying systemic threats facing women and girls. She argued that Speaker Wetang’ula’s decision to sanction her, rather than hold Murkomen accountable for failing to safeguard internal security, reflects “a pattern of contempt” for women’s safety.
Under the suspension, the MP will be barred from accessing Parliament’s precincts and facilities, including offices, restaurants, and the gym. Wetang’ula ruled that her actions amounted to “contempt in the face of the court,” citing Standing Order 107(a), read with (i)(a) and (iii).
Wamuchomba insists her protest was intended to push the Executive and investigative agencies to act decisively in apprehending suspects and fast-tracking prosecutions.
She has called for a press briefing at Utalii Hotel, Nairobi, on Friday, August 15, 2025, where she is expected to issue further remarks on her suspension and the ongoing fight against femicide
