Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has called out Kenya’s political leadership for sidelining maternal health in favor of early 2027 succession politics.
In a strongly worded statement shared on her official X account on Monday, September 29, 2025, Wamuchomba faulted leaders for what she termed as misplaced priorities. She argued that while the Linda Mama health service is rapidly deteriorating, politicians are instead fixated on power deals and political alliances.
“Any leader who comes screaming about the 2027 power formula share and doesn’t care about LINDA mama is hogwash! All we care about is, out of the 4,219 babies born in Kenya daily, how many survive? How many mothers are at risk? That’s the true work of opposition,” she said.
Wamuchomba further criticized Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and President William Ruto, accusing them of failing to prioritize social health insurance reforms. She argued that political lectures are of little value to mothers struggling to access life-saving care.
“Appearing on Sunday to lecture us on who is uniting with whom for the 2027 elections is selfish and greedy for the political class. SHA has failed, and Ruto doesn’t care; all we need now is a solution, not lectures,” she added.
Her remarks follow a statement by Duale on September 27, where he vowed to take urgent government action against preventable maternal deaths. This came after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) raised alarm over Wajir County, where maternal deaths are nearly five times the national average.
Wamuchomba’s intervention underscores a growing public outcry over the state of maternal health in Kenya, as thousands of mothers continue to face life-threatening challenges due to dwindling resources and systemic failures.
