Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has been suspended from Parliament for 20 sitting days after walking out of the chamber during a ministerial response on the gruesome Kware dumpsite killings.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula ruled that her actions amounted to “contempt in the face of the court,” citing Standing Order 107(a), read together with (i)(a) and (iii). During the suspension, Wamuchomba will be barred from entering the precincts of Parliament or accessing its facilities, including restaurants, the gym, and her office.
The standoff began after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen responded to Wamuchomba’s question on the recovery of female bodies from the Embakasi quarry dumpsite. She had sought clarity on the number of female victims identified, the status of investigations, and the steps taken to apprehend the main suspect who escaped police custody.
Murkomen revealed that the homicide unit recovered 17 packages containing dismembered human remains from the site. Post-mortem examinations and forensic analysis identified five victims: Geofrey Okoko, Roseline Ongongo, Wilkister Ojiambo Okoko, Christine Mwende, and Rosemay Ojiambo.
The CS added that a multi-agency team is working to rearrest the prime suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who escaped from Gigiri Police Station on August 20 alongside 12 others. The group reportedly cut through a wire mesh and scaled a perimeter wall.
Visibly agitated by the response, Wamuchomba accused Murkomen of failing the victims’ families, lamenting that the suspect had been on the run for three months.
“Mr. Speaker, I refuse to sit in this House and listen to the CS confirm that his Ministry is unable to capture suspects who were previously under their custody. These are families in pain and grieving,” she said before leaving the chamber.
Wetang’ula termed the act “total discourtesy” and ordered her to return to her seat. When she declined, the Speaker dropped her question and imposed the suspension.
“Members, those kinds of bravado and playing to the gallery do not help at all,” Wetang’ula remarked.
The suspension means Wamuchomba will miss several parliamentary sessions as investigations into the Kware killings and the hunt for the escaped suspect continue.
