Cabinet Secretary Paul Wandayi has dismissed speculations that he may contest for the presidency in 2027, emphasizing his commitment to working with President William Ruto beyond the next elections. Speaking during an interview on Ramogi TV on Thursday, Wandayi said that his focus remains on strengthening the ODM party internally while cooperating with the government for national benefit.
“As the ODM party, we have been looking for the presidency for the last five elections, but unfortunately, we have never got it. Now that is water under the bridge,” Wandayi stated. He added that while he is not ready to vie for the presidency in 2027, he may consider it in the future.
Wandayi also called for a clear political path within ODM, warning that internal tensions and populist comments could weaken the party’s future. He urged members to move beyond criticism without alternatives and to make sound political decisions.
“Everyone is allowed to express themselves freely, be it a preacher or even a businessperson. But when you talk and criticise something, make sure you provide an alternative so that we can evaluate its viability,” he said.
On his decision to serve in President Ruto’s government, Wandayi emphasized that it was for the benefit of all Kenyans, not personal gain. “Today, I am a cabinet secretary, but tomorrow, I might be removed from the cabinet position; life must continue,” he said.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Wandayi acknowledged that Kenya is largely divided into two political camps, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s team having already outlined its strategy. According to him, ODM’s chances of competing independently for the presidency remain slim.
“Should we, as ODM members or the Luo community, front our own candidate for the presidency in 2027? Or should we continue uniting with Ruto? Because Gachagua and his team have already outlined their plan, and we cannot fit in,” Wandayi remarked.
He concluded by urging ODM politicians to exercise sobriety and prioritize unity to ensure the party remains relevant in Kenya’s political landscape.
