Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has criticized opposition leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing them of plotting to ascend to power through unconstitutional means. Speaking in Migori County on Sunday, Wandayi said that such efforts would not succeed and called on the opposition to prepare for the 2027 General Election instead.
Wandayi claimed that recent Gen Z-led protests across the country were politically motivated and driven by leaders hiding behind the youth to further their own ambitions. “The protest was not by the youth, it was by leaders desiring to take leadership. They are hiding behind other people’s children. We warn them to stop that behaviour. They should wait for next elections,” said the CS.
He emphasized that with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now fully constituted, the legitimate path to leadership is through the ballot box, not street agitation or behind-the-scenes maneuvering.
The CS’s sentiments were echoed by South Mugirango Member of Parliament Silvanus Osoro, who reaffirmed support for the ongoing national dialogues led by ODM party leader Raila Odinga. Osoro stressed that the talks present an opportunity for the country to address pressing issues and urged those unwilling to participate to step aside.
“There are leaders who are not interested in dialogue. Let them give space to Kenyans who are ready to engage constructively,” said Osoro.
He also took issue with Gachagua’s repeated attacks on Odinga, urging the Deputy President to respect political seniority. “Gachagua should stop attacking Raila. He is not his equal politically,” Osoro said.
The statements from Wandayi and Osoro come amid increased political tension following a series of youth-led demonstrations against government policies, which some government officials allege are being manipulated by political actors seeking power outside the electoral process.
With the country still recovering from weeks of unrest, leaders across the political divide have called for calm and dialogue as the way forward, warning against exploiting national discontent for personal political gain.
