Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has graciously accepted an apology from Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. following his remarks concerning the HIV/AIDS situation in Homa Bay County. The comments, made during the flagging off of the Makueni youth team for the ongoing Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) games, sparked mixed reactions across the political and public spheres.
Governor Mutula had advised the youth to exercise caution during their stay in Homa Bay, referencing the county’s high HIV/AIDS prevalence. He acknowledged Homa Bay’s openness in addressing HIV, noting that the stigma around the disease is lower compared to other areas. “Homa Bay is a great county… even to the point where someone can openly ask for HIV medication to be delivered to them,” he said.
However, the tone and implications of the remarks raised concerns. Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang was among those who voiced unease, cautioning against perpetuating stereotypes and urging leaders to maintain respect and sensitivity in public discourse.
Realizing the unintended impact of his words, Governor Mutula issued a public apology: “I realise that my words on HIV/AIDS in Homa Bay may have led to a misunderstanding. My apologies to my colleague, Hon. Gladys Wanga, and the people of Homa Bay. I was only cautioning the youth,” he said.
Governor Wanga accepted the apology with grace, stating, “Apology accepted and welcome to the county of endless potential,” as she welcomed guests and visiting teams to the KYISA games.
The 10th edition of the KYISA games is currently being hosted in Homa Bay. The event provides a platform for youth aged 18 to 23 who have missed mainstream scouting in sports. Eligible participants must not be involved in elite or institutional competitions such as KUSA, Division 1 or 2, or the National Super and Premier Leagues.
Last year’s edition was hosted in Kilifi, featuring football, volleyball, and basketball. The games begin at the grassroots level in each of Kenya’s 47 counties, culminating in national-level competitions. This year, Homa Bay is showcasing not only sporting talent but also a spirit of reconciliation and hospitality.
