National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged the Luhya community to unite behind President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. He said their support could secure a presidential seat for the region in 2032.
Speaking at a residents’ forum in Lurambi Constituency, Kakamega County, Wetang’ula emphasized that the community’s voting patterns will shape its political future. “The 2027 General Election will be a defining moment for our community. Our unity will determine our political destiny in 2032,” he said.
Wetang’ula was joined by Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and seven MPs, including Lurambi MP Titus Khamala. The leaders said backing Ruto now could ensure support for a Luhya candidate when he exits in 2032.
Invoking the legacy of the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa and veteran politician Masinde Muliro, Wetang’ula stressed the importance of unity. He added that his renewed partnership with Oparanya, once a rival, aims to consolidate development in Western Kenya.
The leaders praised Ruto’s development record, including frequent visits to the region and revival of stalled projects. Wetang’ula highlighted Sh500 million allocated for Kakamega Level Six Hospital as a key achievement.
He also warned young politicians against disrespecting senior leaders, singling out former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala for remarks against senior officials. Oparanya dismissed corruption allegations against him as politically motivated, while MPs and Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda lauded his development work.
