National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Kenyan politicians to abandon divisive rhetoric and embrace inclusive leadership, declaring that leadership is not a preserve of a few individuals. Speaking during a series of economic empowerment events in Jomvu and Likoni, Mombasa County, Wetang’ula emphasized that Kenya is a diverse but united family, and leadership must reflect that unity.
“There are people who believe that unless they are in leadership, then there is no leadership at all. That, unless they occupy a certain position, the country cannot move forward,” said Wetang’ula in what appeared to be a veiled critique of some opposition leaders. “Leadership is not a monopoly. There is room for all of us to serve, to lead, and to make an impact from wherever we are.”
He urged citizens and leaders alike to reject entitlement and politics of division, stating that Kenya’s progress hinges not on political noise, but on unity and collective action. Wetangula affirmed that democracy thrives on mutual respect and inclusion not on exclusion and power struggles.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who also attended the events, echoed Wetang’ula’s message, citing the cooperation between President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga as a vital step toward national healing and progress. “The President and Raila are working together because unity is more important than division. We must put Kenya first,” said Kindiki.
The Deputy President also announced the revival of the Kazi Mtaani programme to address youth unemployment, alongside efforts to boost trade and support beach management units.
Major political figures including Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wah, Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko reinforced the call for unity and development-focused leadership.
Ichung’wah lauded development in Likoni, citing the Dongo Kundu Road as evidence that leadership should be measured by results, not ethnicity. Governor Nassir cautioned against returning to colonial-style divisions and reiterated Kenya’s identity as one family with diverse voices.
Wetang’ula concluded by urging every Kenyan youth and leaders alike to step into their purpose and believe in their ability to shape the nation’s future.
