National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on journalists covering parliamentary proceedings to uphold accuracy, objectivity, and professionalism in their reporting.
Speaking on Thursday, November 6, 2025, during a consultative meeting with the newly elected leadership of the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA), Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative relationship between Parliament and the media. The meeting was led by KPJA Chairman Moses Aliwa.
Wetang’ula described the media as a “critical stakeholder in advancing the legislature’s agenda of legislation, oversight, and representation.” He noted that journalists play a vital role in informing and educating the public on parliamentary business, urging them to remain factual and authentic in their coverage.
“Drawing from my years of experience working with journalists, I urged them to strive to remain factual and authentic in their reporting while upholding high levels of professionalism,” the Speaker said.
He further challenged journalists to read widely, research deeply, and maintain accuracy when covering parliamentary activities, noting that responsible reporting strengthens public trust in democratic institutions.
Wetang’ula clarified that Parliament does not view the media as adversaries but as partners in governance and public accountability. To solidify this partnership, he announced plans to construct a modern, well-equipped media centre within Parliament, aimed at improving journalists’ working conditions.
The Speaker also revealed that the legislature will provide capacity-building and professional training opportunities to enhance journalists’ skills and career growth.
Additionally, Wetang’ula disclosed that an upcoming retreat in Mombasa will bring together Parliament and KPJA members to deliberate on areas of collaboration, media development, and professional ethics.
He was accompanied by Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge, Director of the Speaker’s Office Stephen Apopo, and Chief of Staff Benson Milimo.
KPJA officials present included President Moses Aliwa, Vice President Irene Mwangi, Treasurer Elizabeth Mutuku, Secretary General Edwin Obuya, Deputy Secretary General Collins Omulo, Organising Secretary Emmanuel Too, and Liaison Officer Josphat Thiongo.
