A group of outstanding Kenyan university students who triumphed at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final 2024–2025 in China were on Monday hosted at the National Assembly by Speaker Moses Wetangula. The students delivered an exemplary performance, winning four major awards across the Computing, Network, Cloud, and Innovation tracks during the competition held in Shenzhen from May 20–24, 2025.
Commending their success, Wetangula lauded the students for putting Kenya on the global technology map. “Life is a continuous journey, and success is a constantly moving target. I warmly applaud our brilliant students for their resounding victory. However, I also challenge them not to relent. Let this achievement be a stepping stone. Continue to push forward and leverage emerging technologies to create practical solutions for Kenya and the world,” he said.
Among the standout participants was Mark Omaiko, a second-year Cloud Computing and Information Security student at Machakos University. “This win is not for us individually, but for Kenya and all Kenyans. We encourage fellow students to register for such programs. It’s been the experience of a lifetime,” Omaiko reflected.
A notable highlight was the recognition of Kenya’s all-woman team, which clinched the coveted Women in Technology Award. The team included Rukia Mwari and Banzy Nyaga from JKUAT, and Beverlyne Ndombi and Ifrah Hussein from Moi University trailblazers in telecommunications and computer engineering. Their performance marked a significant milestone in gender inclusion in STEM fields.
Huawei Kenya’s Deputy CEO, Stephen Zang, praised the growing number of girls embracing ICT, calling the female competitors future leaders of the digital economy. “They are not just participants they are paving the way for more women to join and thrive in tech,” he said.
The Huawei ICT Competition forms part of a wider partnership between Huawei and the Kenyan government aimed at enhancing digital skills and bridging the gap between academia and industry. The students’ achievements underscore Kenya’s rising status as a technology hub and highlight the transformative potential of youth-driven innovation.
