Winnie Odinga has expressed deep pride and emotion following the posthumous recognition of her late father, Raila Amolo Odinga, with Kenya’s highest civilian award the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.).
The announcement was made during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County. President William Ruto conferred the honour in recognition of Raila’s lifelong service, resilience, and contribution to the nation’s democracy.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Winnie wrote:
“Winnie Odinga: First Class – Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.). Dated the 20th October, 2025. I’m so very proud of you, Dad.”
Her post quickly went viral, resonating with Kenyans who joined her in celebrating the legacy of the late ODM leader and former Prime Minister.
During his Mashujaa Day address, President Ruto described Raila as a “towering patriot and a hero for the ages.” He noted that the award was bestowed “on behalf of a grateful nation,” acknowledging Raila’s enduring fight for justice, equality, and democratic governance.
“The government and the people of Kenya inscribe Raila Odinga’s name among the foremost of our heroes under the public seal of the Republic of Kenya,” President Ruto said.
The C.G.H. honour places Raila among a distinguished group of Kenyans celebrated for their extraordinary service and sacrifice. The gesture came as the country continues to observe seven days of mourning following his death earlier this month.
The Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui were marked by solemn reflection and national unity, as Kenyans paid tribute to a man whose political courage and unwavering spirit shaped the course of the nation’s democracy.
Raila Odinga’s recognition serves as both a tribute and a reminder of his monumental role in Kenya’s journey toward freedom, justice, and national cohesion.
