East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has hinted at a return to local politics following the death of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during Raila’s final funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Siaya on Sunday, Winnie expressed heartfelt gratitude to President William Ruto for standing with their family during the mourning period.
“Your Excellency, our people appreciate you honouring our father. Thank you for standing with us. You should also know, in case you are wondering, I’m ready to come back home,” Winnie said, turning directly to the President.
President Ruto, seated beside Mama Ida Odinga, exchanged glances before smiling an interaction that caught the attention of many in attendance.
Raila’s recent cooperation with Ruto under a broad-based government arrangement had softened years of political rivalry between the two leaders. The President also supported Raila’s African Union Commission chairmanship bid, which he narrowly lost in February.
Political analysts now say Raila’s death is a significant setback for Ruto, who relied on the veteran opposition figure to maintain political balance following last year’s Gen Z-led anti-government protests.
Winnie, who has served as EALA MP since December 2022, has been widely praised for her composure and leadership during the mourning period. Many Kenyans see her as a potential heir to Raila’s political mantle, though observers acknowledge that the vacuum he leaves behind will be difficult for anyone to fill.
She ended her speech with her now-signature phrase: “The king is dead, but long live the crown. God bless the republic, God bless Baba’s legacy,” raising her fist in a symbolic gesture of continuity.
Raila Odinga will be laid to rest later on Sunday at the family’s Kang’o Kajaramogi home in Siaya, marking the end of a remarkable political era for Kenya.
