EALA MP Winnie Odinga has reaffirmed the enduring spirit of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), describing the party as an institution built on sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering loyalty to the Kenyan people. Speaking during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, Winnie said the party’s fire is “far from fading” and continues to inspire a new generation of politically conscious youth.
She noted that since its formation two decades ago, ODM has consistently represented the aspirations of ordinary Kenyans seeking justice, equity, and accountable governance. According to Winnie, the movement’s identity has always been tied to its boldness and its readiness to confront power.
“ODM has been the heartbeat of the Kenyan people for 20 years,” she said. “ODM was born from protest, it was raised in resistance, and the people of ODM have time and time again bled, sweated and shed tears for this country.”
Winnie acknowledged that the party has not always been perfect, but she insisted that ODM’s confrontational approach is intentional and necessary for Kenya’s democratic growth. She dismissed the negative labels used by critics, arguing that ODM’s activism has expanded civic and political space over the years.
“We may not always get it right,” she said, “but we will never be sorry for being inconvenient. They like to call us a party of goons, but what we are doing is nation-building.”
She described nation-building as a demanding and often uncomfortable process, citing ODM’s long history of protests, policy battles, and civic engagement.
Despite the challenges, Winnie said she is optimistic about ODM’s future. She highlighted the growing involvement of young people who, she noted, have the conviction and energy to defend democratic ideals.
Her remarks come as ODM undergoes internal reorganization. The National Governing Council recently approved Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as party leader, with several governors and MPs also confirmed to key leadership roles, pending ratification by the National Delegates Convention.
