A Nairobi-based woman accused of defrauding a businesswoman of Ksh.36 million has been released on a Ksh.3 million cash bail.
Lilian Wangui Odwoma, also known as Lilian Weru, appeared before Magistrate Dolphina Alego on Monday, where she denied the charges leveled against her.
The prosecution alleges that between May 6 and May 20, 2024, in Westlands, Nairobi, Wangui conspired with unidentified accomplices to defraud Elizabeth Wanjiku Muigai of USD 50,000 (approximately Ksh.7.3 million) and Ksh.30 million. Wangui is accused of falsely promising to assist the complainant in securing a standby letter of credit from Pacific Concord International FZC, a company based in Dubai.
In addition to the main fraud charge, Wangui faces two other counts related to the acquisition and use of proceeds of crime. The prosecution maintains that the funds in question were illegally obtained and that Wangui played a central role in the alleged scheme.
During the hearing, Wangui, through her lawyer John Swaka, pleaded for leniency. Swaka cited his client’s ill health as a key reason for requesting a moderate bail amount. Magistrate Alego allowed the release on Ksh.3 million cash bail, with the case scheduled for mention on September 16, 2025.
The allegations come amid growing concerns about financial fraud targeting businesspersons in Nairobi, particularly through schemes promising access to international financial instruments. Authorities have warned the public to exercise caution when dealing with promises of overseas financial assistance, emphasizing the need for verification before transferring funds.
Wangui’s case highlights the legal framework surrounding financial crimes in Kenya, including strict provisions against fraud and money laundering. If convicted, she could face significant penalties, including imprisonment and forfeiture of illegally obtained assets.
The next court mention will provide an update on the prosecution’s progress and any further legal steps. For now, Wangui remains free on bail, as the judicial process continues to unfold.
