A coalition of youth leaders across Kenya is calling on the newly constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to demonstrate utmost transparency, fairness, and professionalism as it begins preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The appeal comes amid political tension and growing public skepticism following the recent appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as IEBC Chairperson, alongside six commissioners. The appointments by President William Ruto came after the High Court nullified an earlier list of appointees announced on June 10, citing procedural irregularities.
While the new commissioners have officially assumed office, opposition leaders and civil society groups have raised concerns over the selection process, arguing that it lacked inclusivity and adequate consultation, potentially undermining constitutional values.
Speaking during a press conference in Ruiru, Bishop David Munyiri Thagana, patron of the Munyiri Africa Foundation, urged the IEBC to operate with complete impartiality and professionalism.
“Kenyans are looking to this new team to safeguard the credibility of our democracy. The commission must commit to neutrality and build trust ahead of the 2027 polls,” said Bishop Thagana.
The youth leaders emphasized that the integrity of the electoral body is vital in restoring public confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes and in preventing political instability often witnessed during election periods.
They also expressed concern over recent violent protests, particularly during the Saba Saba commemorations, which saw youth—especially from the Gen Z movement—take to the streets to voice frustrations over governance and economic issues. The protests were marred by the destruction of property and reports of casualties.
“While we support the constitutional right to protest, we must denounce violence. Peace and stability are essential for our country’s future,” Thagana stated.
To foster national cohesion, the youth coalition proposed the establishment of a non-partisan, multi-sectoral dialogue platform. This forum, they suggested, should be insulated from political influence and focus on addressing the root causes of discontent, promoting inclusive governance, and fostering unity across Kenya.
As the country moves towards the 2027 elections, youth leaders remain adamant that transparency, dialogue, and peace must guide Kenya’s democratic journey.
