Twelve police officers are under arrest and being interrogated after six suspects dramatically escaped from custody at the Siaya Law Courts on Monday. The escape, which has sent shockwaves through the local security apparatus, occurred as the inmates were being escorted back to remand after appearing in court.
The six escapees Fredrick Wafula, John Ngote, Farid Kimtai, John Okumu, Albert Otieno, and Kevin Otieno were all facing serious charges of robbery with violence, a capital offence under Kenyan law. Despite being under police escort, they managed to flee the court premises, raising concerns about the circumstances under which the escape occurred and the potential complicity or negligence of the officers involved.
Siaya County Police Commander, Serah Koki, confirmed the incident and stated that all 12 officers who were responsible for prisoner supervision during the court proceedings have been arrested and are currently being questioned. “We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. These were dangerous suspects. We need to establish what went wrong and whether it was a case of negligence or collusion,” said Koki.
She added that a manhunt has been launched to trace the escapees, who remain at large. “Our officers are actively pursuing leads, and we urge members of the public to report any information that could lead to their capture,” she said.
The incident has sparked criticism of the security procedures in place at the Siaya Law Courts and prompted calls for an overhaul of prisoner handling and court security protocols. Sources within the police service suggest that the suspects may have taken advantage of a lapse in security or exploited a moment of confusion to make their escape.
This development comes at a time when public trust in law enforcement is under increasing scrutiny. If found guilty of negligence or abetting the escape, the officers could face disciplinary measures, including dismissal or criminal charges.
Authorities continue to urge vigilance, warning that the fugitives are considered dangerous and should not be approached by civilians. Investigations into the escape are ongoing.
