A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Mumias West Sub-County, Kakamega County, after being found in possession of cannabis sativa valued at approximately KSh300,000.
The arrest took place on Friday, September 19, along the Bungoma-Mumias Road. Acting on intelligence reports, law enforcement officers intercepted the suspect in Lukoye village, where he was allegedly transporting the narcotics. Upon searching him, the officers discovered 40 brooms of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang. The estimated street value of the recovered drugs stands at KSh300,000.
The suspect is currently being held in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to drug trafficking. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing and that more arrests could follow as they continue to dismantle drug distribution networks in the region.
This incident adds to the growing list of recent crackdowns on narcotics across the country, as security agencies intensify efforts to curb drug-related crimes. Cannabis trafficking has remained a persistent problem, particularly along border and highway routes where traffickers seek to move products from rural production zones to urban centers for distribution.
The National Police Service has emphasized that such operations are part of its broader strategy to combat the proliferation of illegal drugs, which not only fuel crime but also pose a significant public health risk. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing information with authorities to help stem the flow of narcotics in communities.
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities involving drugs to the nearest police station or through available hotlines, including 999, 911, and 112. Additionally, anonymous reports can be made through the #FichuaKwaDCI platform via toll-free number 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp line 0709 570 000.
As the war on drugs continues, this latest arrest underscores the need for sustained community-police cooperation to protect young people and reduce the negative impact of narcotics on society.
