Kilifi sub-county police are investigating former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa following allegations that she slapped Ruth Bendera during a recent funeral engagement. The complaint was filed on Saturday, November 15, at the Kilifi Police Station, confirmed Kilifi sub-county police commander Stanley Tanui.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who condemned Jumwa for what they describe as a pattern of misconduct, particularly at funerals. “We, as the youth, will not tolerate a leader who is all about violence. We condemn the actions,” said one resident. Another added, “Aisha’s actions towards Bendera were disrespectful, and she sets a bad example for the community.”
Bendera attributed Jumwa’s alleged hostility to their diverging political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections. The two politicians were previously close allies, but tensions grew after Jumwa was appointed non-executive chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board in January. The appointment, announced in a Gazette notice, is set for a three-year term and was seen as a strategic move by President William Ruto to secure Jumwa’s continued support for the Kenya Kwanza government.
Bendera, who is reportedly eyeing the Kilifi Woman Representative seat in 2027, accused Jumwa of political betrayal despite her prior support. Earlier in November, a video circulated showing Bendera in Kilifi County stating she owed Jumwa nothing. She highlighted her investment in Jumwa’s political success, saying, “I used my resources and cars to campaign for you, and you got a job in the Ministry. Despite everything, you only handed me a job as a board member earning Ksh10,500 instead of a Nominated Senator position as agreed.”
The alleged slap incident has intensified the political rivalry in Kilifi, drawing condemnation from local leaders and the public alike. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the outcome could have broader implications for the local political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
