Police in Kabete have recovered an AK-47 rifle that was stolen during the violent protests on June 25, 2025, which saw the attack on the Dagoretti Police Post. The firearm was taken during a raid when the station was set on fire by protestors. The recovery was made following an intensive operation carried out by law enforcement agencies, aiming to apprehend those involved in looting and vandalism during the demonstrations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the rifle was recovered in the Gahui area of Kabete after receiving a tip-off about a suspicious individual seen carrying a bulging bag at Gravity Bar. Acting swiftly on this information, officers from the Kabete Police Station tracked down the suspect to his residence in the nearby Njuki-Kirigu area. However, the suspect, upon noticing the approaching officers, managed to flee the scene.
Despite the suspect’s escape, a search was conducted at his home in the presence of his mother, which led to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and a single round of 7.62mm ammunition. These items matched the descriptions of the weapons and ammunition stolen from the Dagoretti Police Post during the protests.
This recovery is part of an ongoing operation by the National Police Service to track down all those involved in the unrest. During the demonstrations, various police stations across the country were attacked, with several firearms stolen and law enforcement officers injured. Authorities have vowed to bring those responsible for the violence to justice, with President William Ruto having issued a strong directive for the arrest of all perpetrators.
In addition to the efforts to recover stolen weapons, the DCI has launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in the attack on Dagoretti Police Post, as well as for other individuals believed to have played a role in the coordinated violence. Law enforcement agencies are now following new leads in the hope of apprehending the culprits.
The violent protests, which left a trail of destruction across several regions, have prompted heightened security measures across the country. In response to the unrest, the Director of Criminal Investigations convened a high-level security meeting to assess the situation and develop further strategies to ensure public safety and prevent future incidents.
