There was drama outside a popular nightclub in Eldoret when a man fired a shot into the air in frustration after being denied entry into the establishment. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning and caused panic among revelers in the vicinity.
According to police reports, the man, who is a licensed firearm holder, arrived at the club around 1 a.m. accompanied by a group of friends. Upon reaching the entrance, security personnel conducted routine checks and discovered that he was armed with a Glock pistol. Following standard safety procedures, the security team informed him that he would not be allowed into the facility while carrying a weapon.
The decision angered the man, who reportedly attempted to force his way into the club despite repeated warnings. When the security team stood their ground, he stepped back, drew his pistol, and fired a single shot into the air. The incident briefly caused panic before police officers arrived at the scene and disarmed him. The Glock pistol was found loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.
The man was detained for questioning and later instructed to report back to the police station for further processing and possible arraignment. Authorities have since condemned the act, emphasizing that misuse of firearms, even by licensed holders, is a serious offense that endangers public safety.
Incidents involving reckless handling of firearms have been on the rise across the country, prompting police to warn that strict action will be taken against offenders. The authorities have reiterated the importance of responsible gun ownership and adherence to firearm regulations.
In a related development, more than 340 assorted guns and over 2,300 bullets have been recovered during the ongoing disarmament operation in the Kerio Valley region. The exercise, targeting areas in Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties, aims to eliminate illegal firearms and restore peace in the North Rift.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki recently expressed his support for the intensified disarmament drive, describing it as a critical step toward achieving long-lasting stability in the region. He urged the Interior Ministry to continue the operation until all illegal weapons are surrendered, pledging government support for peacebuilding and economic empowerment initiatives once normalcy is fully restored.
The government maintains that the disarmament exercise will pave the way for sustainable peace and development in the volatile Kerio Valley.
