Gunmen ambushed a vehicle ferrying goods in Baringo County, killing a supermarket worker and leaving another injured in a violent robbery that has once again highlighted insecurity in the region.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon as a team of supermarket staff transported supplies from Nginyang towards Nakuru. At around 3 pm, four armed men ambushed the vehicle near Loruk Junction, opening fire on the occupants.
During the attack, a loader identified as Henry Njuguna was fatally shot, dying instantly at the scene. The driver was wounded in the thigh but managed to survive, while another passenger escaped unhurt.
According to police reports, the attackers stole Sh52,000 in cash, several packets of sugar, and two packs of tissue paper before fleeing. Security teams responded swiftly, but the bandits managed to escape. Njuguna’s body was taken to a mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.
Operation Maliza Uhalifu in Focus
The area where the shooting occurred falls under the government’s Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a multi-agency security initiative aimed at dismantling armed banditry in Baringo and other parts of northern Kenya. While the operation has reduced the frequency of attacks in several counties, sporadic raids and ambushes persist.
Authorities say the long-term approach goes beyond security crackdowns, with the government investing in sustainable development, agricultural support, and community empowerment. Interior officials have announced plans to provide subsidised farm inputs, extension services, and other livelihood programs to encourage residents to abandon cattle rustling and embrace legitimate economic activities.
Fresh Measures for Security
As part of ongoing reforms, all National Police Reservists (NPRs) in the region will undergo fresh vetting. The reservists will now operate directly under the command of local police station commanders to improve coordination and accountability.
Officials insist that the government’s mission is not only to neutralise criminal gangs but also to dismantle the broader networks that sustain cattle rustling and banditry. The ultimate vision is to restore security and promote long-term peace in the Kerio Valley belt and across northern Kenya.
The latest killing has once again underlined the urgency of these efforts, as families continue to suffer from the cycle of violence, theft, and loss of life in the troubled region.
