Police in Baringo County have received two illegal firearms that were voluntarily surrendered by members of the public on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Tangulbei, Tiaty East Sub-County.
The National Police Service (NPS) described the surrender as a positive step in the government’s ongoing peace and disarmament efforts across the North Rift, where illegal firearms have historically fueled insecurity and inter-communal conflicts.
In a statement released on Thursday, November 13, 2025, NPS commended local leaders and residents for their cooperation and growing trust in peacebuilding initiatives.
“The voluntary surrender reflects continued public goodwill and trust in the ongoing government-led peace and disarmament initiatives across the North Rift region,” the statement noted.
This move comes shortly after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen pledged a relentless crackdown on illegal firearms in the area. Authorities praised communities for embracing dialogue and supporting national security operations aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability in regions affected by banditry and cattle rustling.
“The National Police Service commends the collaboration of local leaders and community members for their steadfast support in fostering peace and enhancing regional security,” NPS added.
Residents in possession of illegal firearms have been urged to hand them over voluntarily, with authorities assuring safety and confidentiality throughout the process.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue sharing information to aid in the recovery of illegal firearms and promote community safety,” the statement added.
This recent surrender follows a similar incident a week earlier in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where two illegal AK-47 rifles were handed over at Embobut Police Station. Since the launch of the disarmament initiative in Elgeyo Marakwet, authorities have recovered a total of 301 illegal firearms, 2,175 rounds of ammunition, and one rifle grenade.
The ongoing efforts reflect a government commitment to enhancing security, fostering peace, and reducing the impact of armed conflicts in the North Rift region.
