Police in Baringo County have recovered four illegally held rifles that were voluntarily surrendered by residents in Orus Location, Tiaty East Sub-County. The National Police Service (NPS) reported that the firearms were handed in on Saturday along with four magazines and eight rounds of ammunition.
The recovered weapons have been secured by police and are pending further action, the NPS added. This surrender comes amid an ongoing government-led peace and disarmament initiative in the region aimed at restoring stability and reducing insecurity.
In a statement, the NPS highlighted that voluntary disarmament plays a vital role in fostering peace and maintaining law and order. “We commend the local leaders and community members for their cooperation. Community involvement remains key to restoring calm and preventing violence,” said the service.
This latest recovery forms part of broader collaborative security operations, which have so far led to the surrender of 396 illegal firearms and 1,503 rounds of ammunition in the county. Authorities have urged residents to continue cooperating with the disarmament campaign, emphasizing that it provides a safe avenue for individuals to relinquish weapons without facing prosecution.
The disarmament drive in Baringo County is part of a nationwide effort to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, reduce crime, and promote peaceful coexistence among communities. Police and local leaders have been conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of illegal weapons and the benefits of surrendering them voluntarily.
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting illegal arms and supporting the government’s initiatives to restore peace. The NPS reiterated its commitment to ensuring the surrendered weapons are handled securely while maintaining transparency throughout the process.
Voluntary disarmament, combined with community policing, is seen as a cornerstone for sustainable peace in regions historically affected by insecurity. With continued cooperation from locals, Baringo County hopes to strengthen safety and build lasting stability for its communities.
