A resident of Tamkal Village in Kolowa Sub-County, Baringo County, has voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 rifle to authorities in a move aimed at strengthening peace and security in the region.
The firearm, which was handed over alongside a magazine and two rounds of ammunition, was received by the Sub-County security team in the presence of local Peace Committee members. It has since been secured at Kolowa Police Station.
Authorities welcomed the gesture, noting that voluntary disarmament plays a key role in curbing armed conflict and crime. Each illegal weapon removed from circulation, they emphasized, reduces the risk of violence and improves the safety of communities in Baringo and beyond.
Peace Committees have been actively engaging with residents to encourage cooperation with security agencies. Their efforts are beginning to bear fruit as more individuals come forward to hand over illegal firearms. This latest surrender demonstrates a growing willingness among communities to support peace-building initiatives.
Police encouraged members of the public to continue sharing information and supporting similar disarmament programs. They highlighted that such actions are crucial for preventing the misuse of weapons, which often fuel insecurity in pastoralist regions.
The voluntary surrender follows the government’s recent announcement of a two-week amnesty period for individuals in possession of illegal firearms. Residents have been urged to surrender weapons at the nearest police station or security post to avoid prosecution.
As part of this initiative, the government has offered incentives to encourage compliance. Individuals who voluntarily surrender firearms will have access to opportunities such as scholarships, technical and vocational training, and participation in affordable housing projects. These measures are designed to provide alternatives that empower communities rather than punish them.
However, officials have also warned that those who defy the amnesty and continue to hold onto illegal firearms will face forceful disarmament and tougher security operations. The government has made it clear that voluntary disarmament is the most favorable option for residents, as it promotes peace and development without confrontation.
The surrender in Baringo marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to reduce insecurity and promote long-term stability in the region. Authorities hope that more residents will follow this example, helping to build a safer environment for all.
