Police officers on patrol along the Busia–Kisumu Road intercepted a passenger bus transporting two bales of bhang in a major anti-narcotics operation carried out on Monday, October 27, 2025.
The officers, who were stationed at the Yala Bridge checkpoint, flagged down the Kampala–Nairobi-bound bus after noticing suspicious movements among some passengers. Upon conducting a thorough search, they discovered two bales of a green substance suspected to be cannabis sativa sealed in yellow cellotape.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the illegal cargo belonged to two passengers on board, who were immediately apprehended at the scene. The suspects are currently in custody and will be processed and arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Authorities confirmed that the seized bhang has been secured as an exhibit at the police station as part of ongoing investigations. The operation is part of a broader national effort to combat the trafficking and use of illicit substances, which continue to pose a threat to public safety and national security.
Police emphasized their continued commitment to intensifying anti-drug operations across the country, particularly along major transport routes frequently used by traffickers. The Busia–Kisumu stretch, being a key connection between Uganda and Kenya, has often been identified as a hotspot for smuggling narcotics into the country.
Earlier this month, a similar operation in Kwale County led to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of two sacks of cannabis sativa concealed in a lorry along the Mombasa–Nairobi Road. The driver of the vehicle was detained pending court arraignment, and the truck was impounded by police.
The recent operations reflect the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies in curbing drug trafficking networks operating within and across Kenyan borders. Police have urged the public to support ongoing efforts by sharing intelligence and reporting suspicious activities to help dismantle syndicates responsible for distributing illegal drugs in the country.
