Police in Bomet County have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of defiling a 13-year-old girl whom he allegedly held captive in his house for three days. The incident took place in Kamobiriri village, Kapletundo ward, within Sotik sub-county.
According to local administrators, the suspect reportedly lured the girl into his home before locking her inside, where he repeatedly defiled her. The girl had been reported missing by her family, prompting a search that involved both residents and local authorities.
The search led to a breakthrough after information was received pointing to the suspect’s residence. Upon arrival, officials conducted a thorough search of the house but initially struggled to find the girl, as she was reportedly hiding on the bed. She was later rescued and taken to safety.
Authorities revealed that the suspect’s parents attempted to prevent his arrest, pleading with law enforcement officers not to detain him despite clear evidence of wrongdoing. Local leaders have condemned the act, emphasizing that such protection of offenders perpetuates sexual crimes against minors.
The area chief described the case as part of a worrying trend of increasing defilement incidents across the region. He noted that many young girls are dropping out of school due to early pregnancies and sexual abuse, adding that parents and community members must work together to protect children.
He further warned individuals who target school-going children that they would face strict legal action. The rescued girl, described as a bright student and one of the top performers in her class, is now receiving medical and psychological support.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court, where he will face charges related to defilement and unlawful detention of a minor.
Meanwhile, rising defilement and teenage pregnancy cases continue to plague several regions in Kenya, including Kilifi, Magarini, Ganze, and Malindi, with activists calling for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and faster access to justice for victims.
