A warrant of arrest has been issued against activist Boniface Mwangi after he failed to appear in court for plea-taking in an ongoing assault case.
Mwangi was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to respond to charges related to an alleged assault but did not attend the proceedings. His absence prompted the prosecution to inform the court, leading the magistrate to issue an arrest warrant against him.
According to a charge sheet presented in court, Mwangi is accused of willfully and unlawfully assaulting a police officer, Osman Omar, who was executing his official duties at the time of the incident. The alleged assault occurred on April 2, 2025, at the Metropolitan Court located in Kilimani, within Dagoretti Sub-County in Nairobi.
The charges further state that Mwangi used abusive language towards the officer with the intention of provoking a breach of the peace. This verbal confrontation, allegedly directed at Officer Omar, is one of the two counts Mwangi is currently facing in the case.
In addition to the alleged assault on Osman Omar, Mwangi is also accused of a separate count of assault on another police officer, Robert Oyola. The second count alleges that Mwangi willfully and unlawfully assaulted Officer Oyola at the same location and on the same date as the first incident. Officer Oyola was reportedly performing his official duties when the alleged assault occurred, resulting in actual bodily harm.
The specifics of the confrontation have not been detailed in court, but the charge sheet indicates that both incidents took place within the premises of the Metropolitan Court, suggesting a potentially heated exchange during legal proceedings or events surrounding them.
Following Mwangi’s failure to appear in court, the magistrate emphasized the importance of adhering to court procedures, especially when facing criminal charges. The issuance of a warrant signifies the court’s intent to compel Mwangi’s attendance at the next scheduled session.
The case is expected to be mentioned again on July 14, 2025, during which the court will review the progress of the matter and determine the next steps, depending on whether Mwangi complies with the warrant and appears before the court.
Boniface Mwangi, a prominent activist known for his vocal criticism of government institutions and advocacy for social justice, has not publicly responded to the allegations or the court’s actions as of Thursday afternoon.
The unfolding legal proceedings are likely to attract public attention, given Mwangi’s high profile and previous confrontations with law enforcement authorities. The court is now waiting for the enforcement of the arrest warrant and Mwangi’s subsequent appearance to answer to the charges.
